Homesickness and dysfunction

I moved from Ohio to New England over 8 months ago. Before then, I never lived more than 20 minutes from the place I grew up. The environment I grew up in had a bit of dysfunction that came in the form of emotional neglect and at times physical abuse. I had been trained to believe that all homes were dysfunctional and that you always needed to put your family first.

I know now that this is not the case and I get tripped out from it sometimes. I recently made a trip back home, which was the 2nd since I moved and it was less exciting than I expected. I went back for 4 days, 2 of which involved 10 hour drives. I went to visit my mom mostly and noticed that I was “done” with the visit inside of a couple hours. The conversations just weren’t very deep and focused a weird amount on the deals she got at the grocery store. I craved something deeper from it, even though we have never really had in the first place. It made me feel sad and isolated from people that I’ve spent years around.

If you’re finding that your relationships changed after you moved, you’re not alone. Once we lose that proximity to others, it’s harder to maintain those relationships. Therapy can help with this. If you are feeling like you’re in the same boat and want to try therapy for it, you can book a consultation with Dryad Counseling here.
