Trans Day of Visibility

March 31st has been the Trans Day of Visibility for years and every year, I make a point to post about being a transgender person.

I often find myself each year asking “Why is it so important for me to make these posts? Why is it that over a decade of living as my authentic self that these still need to be made?”. It always comes back to bringing hope to someone who is struggling to see someone like them thrive.

Some lawmakers really love to police public bathrooms and use transgender people, particularly trans women to push their agenda for votes and play on fears under the guise of “protecting the children”, which has been a debate for a long time in their eyes.

I openly identify as queer and proudly share my transgender identity to show that we exist, just as everyone else does. We just want to live and be successful, even happy.

In session, my trans clients have found that having a visible, successful and relatable therapist to be comforting and inspiring. One client described it as “goals”. It validates their experiences and shows them that there can be hope, even if others would rather see them suffer.

I am proud to be who I am and worked for a long time to be comfortable and live authentically.
