My approach to therapy

Over my career, I’ve learned about so many different models to use with clients, but I’ve found that there is no “one size fits all” approach.  My approach is more eclectic than anything, but there are two that I use more than others.

I prefer to use a person centered approach, focusing on the client and their needs in the session.  This approach does have some clients talking more than they would like, but I’ve found that talking out loud helps clients make connections better than anything I can say to them.  This approach requires me to be non-judgmental and acknowledge my client’s experiences, to not let my own experience overshadow theirs. My client is the expert on their experience.

I also use a lot of Solution Focused Brief Therapy techniques.  This approach is best for clients with specific issues that can be “solved”, like work stress or making a career change.  I find this to be the most effective when clients know what the problem is, but need some help to come up with the solution.

I’m always learning about other approaches to therapy and make it a point to learn as much as I can about a new intervention before using it with clients;. I also recognise that I can’t learn them all, so I refer clients to other professionals who are trained in approaches that may be better for them.
